Commercial Driving Lessons - DOs and DONTs

So you've got your Commercial Learner's Permit. Now you are ready to take lessons!

What do you do? Let me present a quote made by John C. Maxwell - The no. 1 New York Times bestselling author, coach, and speaker.

Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you.

Yet, to make the right choices, you need a guide. If you are new to some profession, let experienced professionals guide you. Of course, sometimes you can figure it out on your own but the pro guidance wins in most cases.

How can we help you?

My name is Yefim and I am the owner of Red Hook Commerical Driving School! Of course, it is the nature of most humans to find the best deals, to save themselves money - and this is understandable. But, one thing where you need to invest in is your education. Be it rocket science or ballet or a CDL school, you want to invest in your education in the most efficient way. Otherwise, it will cost you much more later.

It is a common mistake new students make!

Commercial truck education is not comparable to your regular car education. It is much more complicated and takes an effort to learn and practice.
We recommend taking at least 10 lessons to get a feel of it; then learn Commercial Driver's Manual diligently. And then you may have a chance to succeed with Road Test also called Skills Test.
For many, it seems like an excessive amount of lessons and money. Believe us, it is the bare minimum. People take less than that, fail most of the time during the road test, come back and take more lessons again; pay again for the truck to go to a new road rest.
This picture keeps repeating in our school and every other school in the nation.
At the end of the day, it costs students much more than our initial recommendation.
So, we warned you :) - take this seriously! At the end of the day, our school cares more about students passing their exams for the very first time - it is our reputation.
Also, don't expand your education in months, our memory has the ability to erase some details. Try to accommodate your lessons within a month.
You invest in your career! You will get paid well! So invest smart right from the start!

Your stunt double!

We have a few cases from time to time when some students asked someone else to take an exam for them. This is a BIG and RED "NO". Don't even think about that. First of all, it is against the law - it may impact you, our school, and the community around you! CDL Test is about safety first and foremost! Do not jeopardize your own safety and the safety of the people around you!

ELDT

Talking about safety! Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration or FMCSA made a new rule on Feb 7, 2022. You should take ELDT or Entry Level Driver Training. This is Mandatory. There is new material to learn here with the goal to decrease accidents on the road. Some students don't think it is Mandatory. Unfortunately, if you do not sign up for ELDT, they won't allow you to take Road Test. That's a new Federal Rule. If you decide to take it with our school, we will enroll you and register you with USDOT FMCSA TPR system. The only exception to this rule is if you have Learner's Permit before Feb 7, 2022, extended it and it is still valid.

And The Last Thing - Bring Your Licenses to Road Test!

Talking about the validity of your documents! Please ensure you bring your active, non-expired New York Non-CDL (or regular) Driver License and active, non-expired New York Commercial Learner's Permit. From time to time, people bring expired documents to Road Tests. Or forget them. Please make sure you don't do that! Otherwise, examiners won't allow you to take the Road Test!
